Monkey (cont.)

IV Habitat

Habitat (General)
Different species of monkeys are found in varying habitats, based on their physical characteristics. While some monkeys are found living within trees, jungles, and rain forests (arboreal), other monkeys are specialized for living on land, in savannahs and mountains (terrestrial). However, almost all types of monkeys have some form of physical advantage which allow them to live in trees.
Geographic Location
Old world monkeys or cercopithecoids are usually found in the rain forests, mountains, and savanna of Africa, Asia, India, as well as small parts of Japan. On the other hand, new world monkeys or platyrrhines are often found on the other side of the globe. The new world monkeys (platyrrhine) live in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America.

Endangerment
Forests, the home to most of the worlds monkeys are being cut down, and burned worldwide. Because of this deforestation, some species of monkeys are facing high risks of extinction. These include guenon and colobus monkeys of Africa, the macaques and langurs of Asia, as well as the marmosets of South America. Since these species of monkeys rely on the forest as their home, food supply, and shelter, the increasingly dwindling amount of trees are proving to be fatal. [Additional information: Pygmy marmosets are the smallest species of monkeys]

V Types

Although there are over 190 different species on monkeys, there are two major types of monkeysnew world monkeys, and old world monkeys. New world monkeys are generally flat nosed, more acrobatic, have nostrils that are located far apart, have three premolars, and have prehensile tails. Alternatively old world monkeys have frontward or downward noses, two premolars, are less acrobatic, and have tails that arent prehensile. Additionally, in new world monkeys, males are more likely to be involved with the care of baby monkeys, while old world monkeys typically dont.

VI Behavior

Monkeys are one of the most intellectual types of mammals. Their intelligence permits them to adjust and survive in a wide spectrum of environments, and perform a variety of actions. Contrary to some other species in the Mammal Kingdom, monkeys are capable of superior mental tasks and can communicate in a variety of wars. Also because of their extraordinary mind capabilities, monkeys are used in a variety of scientific and technological tests. [See Research]
